The enemy

tries to tell me

I am dead inside.

It’s easy to believe,

and once I accept that lie,

that’s when a volley of

flaming arrows

rain down on me.

It’s harder to escape

the enemy when you’re

engulfed in smoke

and fire.

My God

hears me

amid the roaring fire.

My God

sees me

beyond the veil of smoke.

And even if

the inside of my soul

feels very dead

still I will

within that smoke

and fire

because my God

does not abandon

and my God

is in the business

of calling the dead

back to life.
